CHAPTER 10

The next day Nicole began taking deep breaths as she walked into the compound. She quickly went straight past Sloan’s office. He was still pissed at her, more pissed than she had ever seen him and she had seen him beyond pissed. Tomorrow was the game as well as the Thanksgiving dinner for the kids. It was earlier than she had planned. She had wanted it to be on Thanksgiving, but once again her plans went to hell. Yet, the money they were going to make for the kids made it all worth it. Even the raging anger directed toward her from Sloan was tolerable because of what this would do for the children, not only locally, but everywhere.

Rushing to the kitchen she went inside and wished she hadn’t. Sid was running around cursing, slamming pans, and cursing some more. Stopping she tried to backtrack, but he saw her.

“Remind me to never and I mean never ever agree to do anything like this again.” Sid glared at her. “How in the hell am I going to get all of this done by tomorrow? It’s too much food, Nicole.”

“Sid, you can do this.” She tried the cheerleader approach, pump him up and by the look on his face she was failing miserably. “You are a master in the kitchen.”

“Your flattery is not doing it this time.” Sid growled as he turned around grabbing one of the two uncooked turkey’s and tossed it in the sink. Turning on the water he began washing it with so much anger she felt bad for the dead bird.

“Sorry I’m late.” Jessie said as she tripped her way into the kitchen then looked first at Nicole, then Sid and back to Nicole again. “What’s wrong?”

“What’s wrong?” Sid said, his voice a little high as he pointed the neck of the turkey at them both. “What is wrong?

“Obviously that was a poor choice of question.” Jessie whispered thinking only Nicole could hear her, but Sid heard also.

“Ya think?” He slammed the neck of the turkey on the counter making both Nicole and Jessie cringe. The answer to your poor choice of question is I have a very short time to cook a Thanksgiving dinner for over sixty people.”

Nicole had never seen Sid this frazzled. Warriors didn’t get frazzled. That word wasn’t even in their vocabulary, but Sid was definitely frazzled. That was exactly why she wasn’t going to mention it was probably well over sixty people. Yeah, she’d keep that little tidbit of information to herself. Hopefully they’d have enough food, but as long as the kids ate, she wasn’t worried about it.

“Can you cook?” Nicole leaned over slightly and whispered.

“Actually, very well.” Jessie whispered back. “But he kind of scares me. I mean I don’t mind helping, but I want to live.”

“Do you think I can’t hear you?” Sid was slamming the organs he was pulling out of the turkey’s ass onto the counter. He then turned to glare at Jessie. “You are not the one I want to kill at the moment.
